Soprano, Concert and Tenor ukuleles are usually tuned G, C, E, A (the string closest to you is tuned to G, the farthest bottom string is tuned to A)
It is best to use an electronic tuner so you are sure the the string is tuned to the correct note. Electronic tuners are easy to use and they usually have a meter that will indicate how close you are to the correct note.
Clip on tuners like the one pictured above are very popular and easy to use.
A pitch pipe tuner is an inexpensive alternative to an electronic tuner.
A pitch pipe tuner (pictured above) is a device you blow into to produce the sound that the string is to be tuned to. Beginners sometimes have trouble recognizing when the string reaches the proper pitch.
An electronic tuner is recommend.
IMPORTANT; When tuning always tune up to the note from below the desired
pitch, slowly turn the tuning key until you reach the note. If you miss the note tune it back down
and go up to the note again. That helps insure the proper tension. Try not to
go back and forth right at the note if possible.
You may notice after tuning the ukulele that the strings or the tuning keys slip a little, and the instrument is not holding a tune. Here are a few adjustments that will solve the problem.
STRETCHING THE STRINGS
Sometimes since the strings are new, they need to be stretched out
a bit before they hold a tune. To do this, just pull firmly on the string a number of times, and
then tune it up. After you do this a number of times you may notice that the
strings are fairly close to being in tune, and
they should start to hold a tune better. Nylon strings do take a bit to settle in and hold a tune well.
ADJUSTING THE TUNING KEYS
There are two kinds of tuning keys on ukuleles Friction Tuners and Geared Tuners
These (pictured above) are friction tuning keys, this type of tuning key may need adjustment more often than the geared tuning keys
These (pictured above) are geared tuning keys.
Sometimes the tuning keys will slip so much that you can tell that the tuning keys are slipping. other times they slip very slowly and you will notice that the strings only hold a tune for a short time as a result.
If this is happening simply tighten the screw on the tuning key. After you tighten the screw the tension of the tuning key will be increased.
