Here we solve the F Major 7 problem that many ukulele players have.
We'll look at an easy F major 7 alternative and some simple substitute chords that can be used instead of an F major 7.
WATCH:
NOTES: This is one of those chords where the substitute options are very easy - so if need be or if you'd like - you don't have to play an F Major 7 chord at all!
This dose not mean you should never learn the difficult Fmaj7 as long as you live! This is meant to provide some options -some which may sound better in some circumstances or progressions.
We look at some substitutes here - these these are important to be able to find and use.
They are 'chord family' subs we use in the video.
RULES:
- Any I chord may be a iii or a vi chord (in C the C could be an Am or a Dm)
- Any IV chord can be a vi chord (in the key of C the F could be a Dm)
Substitutes discussed in the video:
- If you're in the key of C use Dm7 instead of Fmaj7 (Dm is the relative minor of F)
- If you're in the key of F use Am7 instead of Bb (Am is the secondary relative minor of F)
Here's the fingerpicking pattern I use in the video - I use the same pattern for the Dm7 chord as well:
Fmaj7

------1-----------1----------
--4---------------------------
--------------2---------------
Also, I wrote a whole book on how to simplify chords "Ukulele Chord Tricks: Simplify any Chord", if you like this check that out too.
Here is the uke I play in the video (mine is an older version):
KALA STRIPED EBONY TENOR with ELECTRONICS with WORTH BROWN LOW G strings, you can string two uses with these because they are extra long - they're not cheap but worth every penny!
