Some bands write all their songs using this scale - I bet allot of your favorites use it!

The top songs in popular music use this - and after this short lesson you'll be able to use it too...

What is MIXOLIDIAN MODE?

The Mixolydian Mode isn't used for licks in popular music it's used for the chord progressions. For licks the minor pentatonic is typically used over the top of MIXOLYDIAN chord progressions.

You use minor pentatonic licks over MIXOLYDIAN chord progression - you'll have the stuff that popular music is made of...

If you take the major scale and flatten the 7th scale degree - you'll have the mixolydian Mode.

MAJOR SCALE has the following intervals: R, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7

A|-----------------0--2--3--2--0-----------------|E|--------0--1--3-----------------3--1--0--------|C|--0--2-----------------------------------2--0--|G|-----------------------------------------------|

MIXOLYDIAN MODE has the following intervals: R, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and b7

A|-----------------0--1--3--1--0-----------------|E|--------0--1--3-----------------3--1--0--------|C|--0--2-----------------------------------2--0--|G|-----------------------------------------------|

Here's a cool lick that might be used as an ending using the MIXOLYDIAN MODE.

EASY LICK:

A|-------0--1--------3----|E|---/3--------3`----0----|C|-------------------0----|G|-------------------0----|

The lick above ends with a C chord. Using licks for endings is a great way to get started with licks.

I know - I said typically the licks (leads, solos) for songs in mixolydian are in the Pentatonic Scale, but we can play licks in Mixolydian as well. If you do take advantage of the cool b7.

MIXOLYDIAN Chord Progressions

This is where the MIXOLYDIAN magic happens.

Some of your favorite songs use MIXOLYDIAN chord progressions:

  • "Sweet Child of Mine" By Guns n' Roses
  • "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)" By The Beatles (into and verses)
  • "Sweet Home Alabama" By Lynyrd Skynyrd
  • "Clocks" by Coldplay
  • "Back in Black" by AC/DC
  • "Hey Jude" By the Beatles (outro)

If C MIXOLYDIAN MODE is harmonized with chords we get the following:

C - Dm - E° - F - Gm - Am - Bb (see C and G harmonized on cheat sheets below)

There are two wild ones here.

The Gm and the Bb...

We always want to take advantage of the wild chords so we'll look st two progressions here - each one takes advantage of one of these wild choices.

The Gm, a minor chord for the V chord, is a beautiful alternative. The Bb adds an unexpected twist to any song in a major key (in a major key we don't expect to hear that bVII)!

The first thing we can do is use that b7 (bVII) for a I - bVII - IV progression:

C - Bb - F (I call this the 'sweet home' vamp in the graphic below).

This can progression be found in popular songs like "Sweet Home Alabama," "Paradise City" and many others.

If you wanted something really wild try the Gm - a minor chord for the V chord is really outside the box...

Our second progression takes advantage of the Gm with a I - v - ii progression:

C - Gm - Dm (I call this the 'clocks' vamp below)😎.

Here is a related cheat sheet in G:

Here is is in D - notice with the alternate D shape in the first progression we get a cool chromatic line on the high A string...

Can we have a song in MIXOLYDIAN with  G major chord rather than the Minor??

Yes we can we can sub a G major for the G minor - we could say we're borrowing the G major from the C major scale or we're just changing the chord quality... Changing chord quality from minor to major is done all the time in popular music.
