This is a cool scale came up allot in 80's guitar solos (that sharpened 7th tone), and chords from this scale can be found in spy Movie soundtracks (m/maj7)! You're gonna love using this to create cool licks!
Here's how we easily make the Harmonic Minor Scale.
First let's look at the Natural minor Scale. This is a C Natural Minor played root note to root note (that means we start and end on the root note).
Natural Minor Scales has the following intervals: R, 2, b3, 4, 5, b6, and b7
A|------------------------3------------------------|E|---------------3--4--6-----6--4--3---------------|C|------2--3--5-----------------------5--3--2------|G|---5-----------------------------------------5---| Here's a video, with a cool lick at the end to give you an example of how you might use the scale to play licks (save so you can use it for practice):
By raising the 7th tone 1/2 step you'll notice you have a step and half interval between the b6th and the 7th tone. That's what makes this one extra cool!
You should run through some scales to warm up each practice - add these to your sessions...
Natural Minor vs. Harmonic Minor
Here they are side by side with all then notes you'll find 'in position', you can use this chart as a handy reference to play licks. These charts show the intervals - that way (once you understand other scales) you can change these on the fly!
Notice only 1 note is different use this knowledge to slip into harmonic minor when you are using any natural minor scale shape (or form).
Practicing similar scales together helps you memorize them quicker - we'll be doing a lot of this here...
These are moveable scales so just find the root note of the key you're in an away you go - no need to learn a whole pile of different positions for these now...
The Harmonized Harmonic Minor Scale
When we harmonize the harmonic minor scale we get some beautiful chords!
We get a major for the V chord, a tweak we see all the time in popular music...
Here's what we get when we harmonize the A Harmonic Minor with chords:
Am - Bdim - C+5 - Dm - E - F - G#dim.
There are quite a few gems here for chords.
Check this out... (whenever we see a diminished chord - we use a dim7 rather the a diminished triad, when harmonized with 7 chords diminished may become m7-5 cords, a half diminished chord. In the case of the G# in harmonic minor we'll actually have a G#dim7 when harmonized with 7 chords).
That G#dim7 sounds cool doesn't it?? The vii functions as a V chord - this is the same chord shape as the G7-9, an excellent choice because of the extreme pull to the I chord.
The magic really happens when we harmonize this with 7 chords.
Take a look...
Here's what we get when we harmonize the A Harmonic Minor with 7 chords:
The real treat here is that m/maj7 chord we get for the i chord - you may say hey - I've heard that sound before and you'd be right is you've listened to some spy movie soundtracks - it in there...
Here's a video (watch to hear now beautiful this is with the Am/maj7):
