Here we learn the ultimate trick for cool chord progressions, we roll around the circle of 5ths to get 'back-cycle' or 'circle progressions!'

If you have a circle of 5ths handy - you always should - you can instantly create these back cycle progressions.

What is a Back-Cycle or a a Circle Progression?

A Back-Cycle is simply a progression that rolls backwards around the circle of 5ths and ends on the tonic (I chord).

The chords here come from the C harmonized scale.

Notice it rolls backwards around the circle of 5ths and resolves on the tonic (the I chord)...

Sounds beautiful doesn't it?

Let's Create More Back-Cycle Progressions

Now - what if we don't go all the way to the E and roll back, let's just go to the D. Here's what we'd get...

What we get here is one of the most popular chord progressions  - THE most popular in JAZZ - The ii - V - I progression.

One more step around the circle for the starting pint and we get another popular progression, the vi - ii - V - I.

For any of these we could start on the I chord as well, the vi - ii - V - I could be a I- vi - ii - V (see how we just flipped this and started on the I chord), this one's widely used in jazz and popular music.

Of course we can go one step beyond where this whole thing started too...

Notice as we keep adding chords they are the chords we find in the harmonized scale.

Make um' all Dominants

You remember our rule - any chord can be a dominant - it can apply here - or anywhere...
