Everyone should know and use the BB KING BOX - play Licks right now!
BB King had an interesting choice of notes for his licks giving them a truly unique sound. If we look at the licks he played and put together a scale using his preferred notes - we get this amazing BB KING box!
The Amazing BB KING Box
This is a hexatonic scale because it has 6 notes , it can be considered a minor scale because it has a b3 (a major 3rd could be used with the scale as well just as it could be added to the pentatonic scale).
Here it is starting and finishing on the root note.
TIP for LICKS: Resolving licks on the root note when getting started playing licks will give you great sounding licks every time!!
The BB KING BOX has the following intervals: R, 2, b3, 4, 5, and 6.

6 EASY LICKS: Here are some BB KING STYLE licks... (KEY: / = slide up to the note; b = bend; ~ = vibrato).
We've got to do bends if we're talking about BB KING - make them simple 1/4 bends, just bend a little.
If you're ready for some next level bends bend the note on the first string 1 step and the ones on the 2nd string 1/2 step - that actually keeps them in key with the BB KING BOX.

You sound like a pro! You can string these together and have yourself a sweet solo if you'd like!
The key to learning to improvise and play solos is to first get some licks under your belt - then you can alter them change them add add to them.
Some folks may tell you to start noodling around right away with a scale - but that dose not work well if you don't have a starting point.
This scale is in Gm, So, If you're in G or Gm you can use the licks as they appear here, otherwise you have to find the root note of the song your in and move the BB KING BOX.

Here's the movable scale with intervals indicated. Knowing the intervals is handy in case you want to Add notes to this - slip in a major 3rd or a b5 etc...
